Work on Kenton housing development gets underway

Work on a high-profile affordable housing development in Newcastle upon Tyne, which showcases innovative architectural design, is now underway.

The Bernicia Group, through its Four Housing subsidiary, is working in partnership with Newcastle City Council on the development of 17 new quality affordable homes in Brigham Avenue, Kenton, representing an investment of £2.2million into the area.

Architectural design firm Halsall Lloyd LLP was appointed architectural partners on the scheme after coming up with a winning design recognising the site’s prominent location close to the Town Moor.

The design concept was inspired by the site’s historic links to the Nunnery of St Bartholomew and the layout reflects some of the characteristics typical of monastic developments, in particular the design uses the concept of cloisters in creating a feeling of enclosure in two courtyards.

The development which comprises a mix of two bedroom apartments and two and three bedroom homes, is scheduled to be complete by spring 2017.

John Johnston, Deputy Chief Executive at Bernicia, said “We are delighted to further our work with Newcastle City Council, delivering more quality affordable homes in areas of high demand for the City. The impressive design for the Brigham Avenue development, really complements the surrounding area reflecting the site’s historic past.”

Councillor Jane Streather, Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Health at Newcastle City Council, said: “The council has ambitious plans for more housing in the City some of which will be affordable to rent. We are pleased to be working with Bernicia and Halsall Lloyd LLP who are helping us to do this with high modern standards.

“This new small scale development will retain some of the historical features of the surrounding area and will provide much-needed quality housing to meet some of the housing need in the city.”

Fiona Brettwood, Partner at Halsall Lloyd Partnership, said: “We are delighted that our project at Brigham Avenue is starting on site after winning the design competition.  We aim to reflect the unique characteristics of every site location in our designs in order to develop projects that have a sense of place and that enhance the local area.”

The Kenton development is also supported by funding from the Homes and Communities Agency.
