180,000 construction jobs will be created over the next five years

Housebuilder Linden Homes is reaching out to the talent of the future to encourage school and college leavers this summer to think about a career in the construction industry.

The CITB estimates that more than 180,000 construction jobs will be created over the next five years while nearly 20% of the current work force is over 55. According to a CITB survey entitled Educating the Educators, 35% of career advisors believe construction to be an unattractive career choice.

A joint report published recently by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry and KPMG warns of a “major skills crisis” in the construction industry noting that a 51 per cent increase in training provision would be required to meet demand for skilled labour between 2014 and 2017 to plug a gap of nearly 15,000 people.

Linden Homes is trying to shift this view by offering a number of routes to employment for school and college leavers alike. The company’s ‘future talent’ programme includes trainee and apprenticeship schemes and a graduate development programme covering a range of functions including commercial, operations, technical, sales and marketing, and support services. These programmes allow candidates to gain a full insight into the business, by working with various teams across the business, whilst gaining training around their working day.

Galliford Try, Linden Homes’ parent company has entered the Job Crowd league table as one of the top 100 graduate companies to work for thanks to the career development programmes offered by the company. Galliford Try also came within the top 10 for construction and civil engineering companies for graduates to develop their skills.

Andrew Richards, group managing director at Linden Homes, who is committed to investing in the future talent of the business said: “We recognise the need to increase knowledge and understanding of the industry and have been actively working within schools, colleges and universities to encourage more students to embark on a career in construction.

“There is a wide range of exciting opportunities available for interested individuals who will be able to develop their skills and build a bright future with us as we grow our business and meet our objectives. It is a great time to be part of the Galliford Try Group.”
