British Ceramics Biennial award winner Tana West exhibits (UN)WOVEN at material lab for London Craft Week 2018

UNWOVEN by Tana West

From 9 May – 7 June 2018, London’s Material Lab will host the award-winning installation (UN)WOVEN by artist Tana West in a collaborative exhibition between the British Ceramics Biennial (BCB) and leading UK manufacturer, Johnson Tiles.

Held during London Craft Week, the design resource studio and materials library will provide the perfect backdrop to West’s dramatic work, which comprises an ongoing investigation into the barriers and divisions across Europe, both real and perceived, and what this means in the context of Brexit.

The installation, which features two works; ‘Pavers’ and ‘Hard Boarder’, contains clay-like soil sent from across Europe, and secured the top prize at last year’s BCB AWARD event, sponsored by Johnson Tiles.

To coincide with the exhibition, announcements will be made on new and exciting developments for the upcoming headline AWARD at the BCB in 2019 – marking a decade of support for the growing and dynamic UK ceramics sector.

Darren Clanford, Creative Director at Johnson Tiles & Material Lab, said: “Both London Craft Week and the British Ceramics Biennial provide fantastic platforms for showcasing the wealth of rising talent from the burgeoning UK ceramics industry.

“As a British manufacturer of ceramic tiles, we’ve long been dedicated to supporting and nurturing designers and makers operating in this medium through championing their work at every opportunity.

“This is also embedded into the ethos of our London-based studio and materials library, Material Lab, which exists to celebrate up-and-coming and established creators alike. We’re honoured to be showcasing the work of Tana West, an artist that we greatly admire.”

Barney Hare Duke, Artistic Director at British Ceramics Biennial, said: “We are delighted to be able to join with Johnson Tiles in presenting Tana West’s piece (UN)WOVEN as part of the prestigious London Craft Week.

“Large scale, finely worked and engineered with an intensity of purpose (UN)WOVEN explores the power of ceramic material to carry meaning and provoke thinking. This exhibition gives London audiences a great opportunity to see and hear about Tana’s work.

“Both Tana and Johnson Tiles are to be congratulated for the inspiration and support that they have given to the pursuit of excellence and innovation in the contemporary ceramics sector.”

To mark the opening of (UN)WOVEN at Material Lab, a launch event will take place on 10 May 2018 from 6-8pm featuring an artist talk with Tana West. Free tickets are available to book via Eventbrite.

The exhibition runs from 9 May – 7 June, Monday to Friday: 9.30am-5.30pm. Entry is free and no booking is required.
